Plays

This morning some people chose to perform some plays.
The first one we watched was called Dragon attack.
It was written by Finlay and preformed by him and his friends.
Since it we are focusing a lot on dragons at the moment it was a very appropriate play.

Aeroplanes

Today we had buddies with Room 6.
We made paper planes and went out to test them on the court.
Some flew really far, and some twirled.
Some just dropped, and some glided.
We were doing experiments on what planes fly the best.

Grace's plane...

Torah's plane...

Josie got to teach Room 9 and Room 6 how to make a classic dart.

Room 9 Dragons

Room 9 Dragons

On Monday, Mrs Kahi read us a describing story all about dragons.
She asked us to draw a dragon in our reading books.
The dragons had to be about you.
Here are some of the Room 9 Dragons...

As you can see, we have also used poetic writing to add to our dragons.

My dragon by Neave ...

My dragon flys over flower fields and glides across water and under water.
She is calm and nice and her eyes soar so bright she can light the way!

My dragon by Finlay ...

My dragon is as big as New Zealand and eats fish.

My dragon by Torah ...

Blood Trust is made of different colours of blood.
I love him more than anything .
But he can get quite a handful sometimes!

My dragon by Meg ...

My dragon lives in a pond,
It's big eyed.It has little babies that fly around it.
It has really spikey sides.

Airforce museum

On Friday the 1st of August rooms 9 & 10 went to the AirForce Museum.
When we got off the bus our tour guide Chris brought us inside.
It was a bit freaky because when we walked in there was a plane directly above us!
He told us to sit down, then he listed the rules and told us about the main
exhibit.
It was a wall. But not any ordinary wall, it marked the people who had died in the Airforce over the years.
Then Chris sent room 10 on a scavenger hunt with the parents and told us he was going to take us upstairs to his classroom.

Sitting on the floor were yellow and black plane pieces and a cockpit. Putting the pieces together we learnt the names of the parts of the plane and how each part works.
In the end we ended up making our own polystyrene planes!
Chris taught us about the 4 forces needed for flight:

Lift: Pushes the plane upwards
Thrust: Pushes the plane forward
Weight: Pushes the plane down
Drag: Slows the plane down

Scavenger Hunt
By Thomas

First Chris gave each of us a sheet and Mrs Kahi put us in to groups with a parent. Then on the sheet it said find your surname on the wall but I couldn't
find it.
Then we had to go and find a plane with a tiki on it. Lots of people thought the plane was a model but actually every plane in the Museum were flown in the
Airforce and were all originals, except for one made of paper and fabric.

We had a great time at the Air Force museum and thank you to all the parents who helped out.
By Meg and Josie.

Strike!

We were treated to a great performance by the percussion group, Strike this week. Wow! The drummers were Tuck, Thomas and Tim. They all went by alias names like Mufussa, Thomas the Tank Engine and Mr T. They played amazing drums set up on racks. A quieter song was played on the marimba. They even made sounds with fire.
After the concert we had a work shop with them and we sounded really good too.

Science - air

Today we learnt about AIR. Did you know that air has lots of little particles floating around in it? If you have an empty paper bag it has things in it like air and carbon dioxide so that it is not empty at all.

We trying pushing air out of a syringe when the top was blocked. It created air pressure. Air is strong.

Air bubbles are pockets of air inside water. They keep dry.

We were amazed to watch a shelled, boiled egg being drawn in and out of a glass flask by pouring either icy child or very hot water on the outside of the flask. Science is a lot of fun!
